Salutation to The Unique and Rare Physician, who has destroyed, without any residue all the
diseases like Raga (lust, anger, greed, arrogance, jealousy, selfishness, ego), which are constantly
associated with the body, which is spread all over the body, giving rise to disease, delusion and
restlessness.
This salutation is done to Lord Dhanwantari.
2. Purpose of life: Essential quality to learn Ayurveda

वधेय: परमादर: ॥
āyu: kāmāyamānena dharmārtha sukhasādhanam | āyurvedopadeśeṣu vidheya: paramādara: ||
To achieve the purpose of life, that is
1. Dharma – following the path of righteousness
2. Artha – earning money in a legal way
3. Kama – fulfilling our desire
4. Moksha – achieving Salvation,
To achieve this purpose of life, one should concentrate on having a long life. To learn the science
of Ayurveda, which explains how to achieve this purpose, ‘obedience’ (Vidheya) is the most
important quality.
3. Origin of Ayurveda

Lord Brahma, remembering Ayurveda, taught it to Prajapathi, he in turn taught it to Ashwini
Kumaras (twins), they taught it to Sahasraksa (Lord Indra), he taught it to Atri’s son (Atreya
Punarvasu) and other sages, they taught it to Agnivesa and others and they (Agnivesha and other
disciples ) composed treatises, each one separately.

तेयो अतवकययः ायः सारतरोचयःयते अटागदयं नातसंेपवतरम ्
From those Ayurvedic text books, which are too elaborate and hence very difficult to study, only
the essence is collected and presented in Ashtanga Hridaya, which is neither too short nor too
elaborate.
4.5-5.5 – Branches of Ayurveda

kāyabālagrahordhvāṅga śalyadaṃṣṭrā jarāvṛṣān || aṣṭāvaṅgāni tasyāhu: cikitsā yeṣu saṃśritā |
1. Kaya Chikitsa – General medicine
2. Bala Chikitsa – Paediatrics
3. Graha Chikitsa – Psychiatry
4. Urdhvanga Chikitsa – Diseases and treatment of Ear, Nose, Throat, Eyes and Head
(neck and above region)
5. Shalya Chikitsa – Surgery
6. Damshrta Chikitsa – Toxicology
7. Jara Chikitsa – Geriatrics
8. Vrushya Chikitsa – Aphrodisiac therapy
These are the eight branches of Ayurveda.
5.5 – 6.5 Tridosha
वायु: पतं कफचेत यो दोषा: समासत: ॥ वकृताऽवकृता देहं नित ते वतयित च ।
vāyu: pittaṃ kaphaśceti trayo doṣā: samāsata: || vikṛtā’vikṛtā dehaṃ ghnanti te varttayanti ca |
Vayu – Vata, Pitta and kapha are the three Doshas of the body. Perfect balance of three Doshas
leads to health, imbalance in Tridosha leads to diseases.
6.5-7.5 How Thridosha are spread in body and in a day?
ते यापनोऽप नायोरधोमयोव संया: ॥

te vyāpino’pi hṛnnābhyoradhomadhyordhva saṃśrayā: ||
vayo’horātribhuktānāṃ te’ntamadhyādigā: kramāt |
The Tridosha are present all over the body, but their presence is especially seen in particular
parts. If you divide the body into three parts, the top part upto chest is dominated by Kapha
Dosha, between chest and umbilicus is dominated by Pitta, below umbilicus part is dominated by
Vata.
Astanga Hridaya Sutrasthan
Page No. 4 Astanga Hridaya Sutrasthan
Similarly, in a person’s life, day and in night (separately), the first part is dominated by Kapha,
second part is dominated by Pitta and third part is dominated by Vata. While eating and during
digestion, the first, second and third part are dominated by Kapha, Pitta and Vata respectively.
7.5 Types of digestive fires
तैभवेवषम: तीणो मदचािन: समै: सम: ॥
tairbhavedviṣama: tīkṣṇo mandaścāgni: samai: sama: ||
There are four types of Digestive fires (Agni)
1. Vishama Agni – Influenced by Vata. A person with Vishama Agni will sometimes
have high appetite, and sometimes, low appetite.
2. Teekshna Agni - Influenced by Pitta. A person with Teeksna Agni will have high
digestion power and appetite.
3. Manda Agni - Influenced by Kapha. A person with Manda Agni will have low
digestion power and appetite.
4. Sama Agni - Influenced by perfect balance of Tridosha – Where person will have
proper appetite and digestion power. Digestion occurs at appropriate time.
8.5 Types of digestive tracts / nature of bowels
कोठ: ूरो मदृ मयो मय: यातै: समैरप ।

koṣṭha: krūro mṛdurmadhyo madhya: syāttai: samairapi |
There are three types of digestive tracts (Koshta):
1. Kroora Koshta – wherein the person will take long time for digestion. The bowel
evacuation will be irregular. It is influenced by Vata.
2. Mrudu Koshta – Sensitive stomach, has a very short digestion period. Even
administration of milk will cause bowel evacuation.
3. Madhya Koshta – Proper digestive tract, bowel evacuation at appropriate times. It is
influenced by Tridosha balance.
9-10 Types of Prakruti – Body Types

samadhātu: samastāsu śreṣṭhā nindyā dvidoṣajā ||
Like the poison is natural and inherent to poisonous insects, similarly, the Prakruti (body type) is
inherent to humans. The body type is decided during conception, based on qualities of sperm and
ovum.
Vata prakruti – Vata body type is considered as low quality
Pitta Prakruti – Pitta body type is considered as moderate quality
Kapha Prakruti – Kapha body type is considered good quality.
Astanga Hridaya Sutrasthan
Page No. 5 Astanga Hridaya Sutrasthan
Tridosha body type – influenced equally by Vata, Pitta and Kapha is considered the
best quality.
Dual body types, Like Vata-Pitta, Pitta-Kapha, Vata-Kapha body types are
considered as not good.
10.5 Qualities of Vata

Sasneha – slightly oily, unctuous, Teekshna – piercing, entering into deep tissues, Ushna –
hotness, Laghu – lightness, Visram – bad smell, sara – having fluidity, movement, drava –
liquidity are the qualities of Pitta.
12. Qualities of Kapha
िनध: शीतो गमद: लणो म ु न: िथर: कफ: ॥ ृ
snigdha: śīto gururmanda: ślakṣṇo mṛtsna: sthira: kapha: ||
Snigdhna – oily, unctuous, Sheeta – cold, Guru – heavy, Manda – mild, viscous, shlakshna –
smooth, clear, Mrutsna – slimy, jely, sthira – stability, immobility are the qualities of Kapha.
संसगः सिनपातच तवयकोपतः
The increase, decrease of individual Doshas, or imbalance of couple of these Doshas is called as
Samsarga. And imbalance of all the three Doshas together is called as Sannipata.
13. Body tissues and waste products

1. Rasa - the first product of digestion, Soon after digestion of food, the digested food
turns into Rasa. It is grossly compared to lymph or plasma. But it is not a complete
comparison.
2. Rakta – Also called as Asruk. – Blood
3. Mamsa – Muscle
4. Meda - Fat tissue
5. Asthi - Bones and cartilages
6. Majja - Bone marrow
7. Shukra – Semen / Ovum or entire male and female genital tract and its secretions are
grossly covered under this heading.
Mala – waste products
Shakrut / Pureesha – (faeces), Sweda (sweat) and Mootra (urine) are the three waste products of
the body.
13.5 Nature of increase and decrease
व: समानै: सवषां वपरतै: वपयय: । ृ
vṛddhi: samānai: sarveṣāṃ viparītai: viparyaya: |
Equal qualities lead to increase, and opposing qualities lead to decrease. For example, dryness is
the quality of Vata. If a Vata body type person exposes himself to dry cold weather, his dryness
and in turn Vata will increase, leading to dry skin. In the same way, oiliness is opposite quality of
dryness. If he applies oil to the skin, then the dryness and related Vata is decreased.
13.5 Six tastes
रसाः वावललवणततोषणकषायकाःष यमाताते च यथापू
व बलावहाः
Svadu – Madhura – sweet, Amla – Sour, Lavana – Salt, Tikta – Bitter, Ushna – Katu – Pungent,
Kashaya – Astringent are the six types of Rasa.
They are successively lower in energy. That means, Sweet taste imparts maximum energy to
body and the astringent, the least.
14. Effect of tastes on Tridosha
ताया मातं नित य: ततादय: कफम ।्
कषाय तत मधु
रा: पतमये त कु ुवते ॥
tatrādyā mārutaṃ ghnanti traya: tiktādaya: kapham |
kaṣāya tikta madhurā: pittamanye tu kurvate ||
In the list of tastes, the first three, i.e. Sweet, sour and salt mitigates Vata and increases Kapha.
The last three, i.e. bitter, pungent and astringent tastes mitigates Kapha and increases Vata
Astringent, bitter and sweet taste mitigates Pitta. Sour, salt and pungent tastes increase Pitta.

ORIGIN OF AYURVEDA

Where Did Ayurveda Come From The Real OriginThere is lot of conversation that takes place regarding the evolution of Ayurveda or the history of the ancient healing science of Ayurveda. The entire philosophy of Ayurveda is based on Sankhya, which means to know the truth. Ayurveda is believed to have originated from the Upnishada portion of the fourth Veda i.e. Atharvaveda
Ayurveda is an Upveda or subsection of the fourth Veda, the Atharva Veda. The 3 vedas – Rigveda, Yajurveda and Samveda represent the psychological process of the human mind. These three vedas represent the three mental powers of Knowledge, Action and Will. Whereas Atharvaveda, of which Ayurveda is believed to have been originated, is the veda of rectification. This lays down specifications about how to bring back the balance and the harmony between these mental states of knowledge, action and will.
Prakriti and Purusha are the two basic energy principles that are the essential components that are believed to lay down the foundation of the entire existence within and of the universe.
- Praktiti is female energy, which is the Creative Energy which is to create.
- Purusha is the male energy which is the Dormant Consciousness is witness to this creation.
- In transcendental stage, both the female and male energies viz. Prakriti and Purusha are in harmony with each other.

Where did Ayurveda come from?

The ancient Indian mythology narrates legends about the evolution of Ayurveda. The ancient healing science of Ayurveda is regarded as the knowledge that has descended on the Earth straight from the Gods in Heaven. Lord Brahma who is the God of creation is believed to have evolved the science of Ayurveda through meditation. HE then passed on the divine knowledge to Daksha Prajapati who was the King of Himalayas. From him, the knowledge of Ayurveda healing was passed on to the twin brothers named Ashwini Kumars who were physicians in the court of Lord Indra, the King of Devtas or the Gods.
When Lord Indra saw Ashwini Kumars performing miracles using the knowledge of Ayurveda, Indra also learnt the science from the twin brother physicians. It was at this time that human beings living on Earth had started to be affected with disease due to losing harmony and discrepancies in diet and lifestyle. The Sages and learned Rishis at that time prayed for relief to humanity and then was the period when Ayurveda descended from heaven to earth. Lord Indra passed on the knowledge of healing mankind to Punarvasu Atray. Rishi Atray further gave the knowledge of Ayurveda to his 6 disciples.. Agnivesh, Bhel, Jatukaran, Prashar, Harit and Sharpani. Of these sages, Agnivesha was most intelligent and wrote the Agnivesha Trantra and from this emerged the well known text of Ayurveda, the Charaka Samhita.
There is another story about the evolution of Ayurveda in Indian Mythology. According to this, during the ancient times, The Gods and the Demons were constantly in long war. Whereas the Gods or the Devtas were struggling to save the ailing humanity, the Devils were adamant to prove their power. The war lasted for a very long time till the Gods decided to get Amrita or nectar of immortality extracted from below the ocean. They knew that the only way the nectar which lied hidden deep down below the ocean was to churn the huge ocean. Churning of the ocean at that time has become a legend happening in Indian mythology named as ‘Samudra Manthana’ where Samudra means the ocean and Manthana is the process of churning. Many divine objects emerged by the process of churning of the ocean and at last emerged Lord Dhanvantari who is worshipped as the God of Ayurveda appeared from the ocean carrying the Nectar in one hand and Ayurveda in another.

Reference in Ayurveda Text

When the Sages or learned Rishis approached Lord Indra (for the sole purpose of saving the humanity which was now frequented with diseases), at that time Indra immediately passed on to them the Upveda of Atharva Veda, Ayurveda which can save from untimely death and misery; which had been further divided into 8 treaties or sub-divisions viz. Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Psychology, Toxicology, Rejuvenation, ENT and Aphrodisiacs.
Also, the Ayurveda Shastra or the textual knowledge that was initially known to Lord Brahma, the father of the Gods, the wisdom healing science of Ayurveda which is pure, pious and fault free, was then introduced to and passed on to the Sages to save the mankind from suffering. Later on when the Maharishis or the learned Sages descended onto the Earth with the precious wisdom of Ayurveda, wrote, practiced and promoted Ayurveda by making different Tantras or the knowledge treaties and spread the virtues of the healing wisdom far and wide through the Gurus or the intelligent teachers and preachers of Ayurveda. This is how the bliss of Ayurveda was gained and praised on the Earth while saving and rescuing Humanity from the clutches of disease.
In Ayurveda text it has been mentioned that Ayurveda had to brought to the rescue of humanity when the purpose of human birth of ascending in the virtues of Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha was being interfered by the fatal diseases that mankind had started experiencing and there was lot of suffering on Earth for this reason.

Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita:

These are considered the two Famous Schools of Ayurveda. Rishi Agnivesha wrote the Ayurveda text as Agnivesha Samhita somewhere before 6th Century AD. The text was revised later by Charaka in the 1st Century AD. His book of Ayurveda text focused on Kaya Chikitsa or the Branch of Medicine. This was named as ‘Chikitsa Sthana’ and is now popularly known as Charaka Samhita.
Similarly, like the Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita was also written in the same period. Yet, whereas Charaka Samhita details about general medicine, Sushruta Samhita deals with Surgical matters and proclaims Sage Sushruta as the ‘Father of Surgery’.

Ayurveda-home therapy.

20140412-130025.jpg
Do you know that the majority of Indian still uses some traditional medicines for variety of ailments? India has a very long tradition of treatment of ailments using alternative medicines.
The whole tradition is very ancient and systematic. It dates back to more around 4000 years, when the Vedas (र्वेद – ancient books of Indian knowledge, wisdom and culture) where supposedly written. The traditional medicines comes under one of four Vedas called Atharvaveda. Under Atharvaveda comes Ayurveda (आयुर्वेद) means the knowledge for long life. The account of traditional medicines are found in Sanskrit works such as Suśruta Saṃhitā and the Charaka Saṃhitā. These two works laid the foundation of Ayurveda. Since then, diagnosis of new diseases and healing methods were added.
In the early works, Ayurveda had considered that Universe including Human body is made of five elements. The five elements are Pṛthvī (पृथ्वी – earth), Jala (जल – water), Agni (अग्नि – fire), Vāyu (वायु – air) and Ākāśa (आकाश – Sky). It stresses a balance of three elemental energies such as Vāyu Vāta (वायु वत – air & space – “wind”), Pitta (पित्त – fire & water – “bile”) and Kapha (कफ – water & earth – “phlegm”).
Ayurveda is considered as the science of following eight components.
1.Internal medicine (काय चिकित्सा – Kāya-cikitsā)
2. Paediatrics (Kaumārabhṛtyam)
3. Surgery (Śalya-cikitsā)
4. Eye and ENT (Śālākya tantra)
5. Bhūta vidyā or in modern terms, Psychiatry.
6. Toxicology (Agadatantram)
7. Prevention of diseases and improving immunity and rejuvenation (Rasayana)
8. Aphrodisiacs and improving health of progeny (Vajikaranam)
It is well known that people in ancient India were well versed with highly systematic systems of the alternative medicines and surgery. Many disease such as fever, cough, consumption, diarrhea, dropsy, abscesses, seizures, tumours, and skin diseases (including leprosy) etc. were classified. Treatment of complex ailments, including angina pectoris, diabetes, hypertension, and stones were also found and documented. Early works of Ayurveda such as Charaka Samhita, is dedicated to Charakas. Plastic surgery is documented as well in these ancient Indian texts. Plastic surgery of nose, ear lobes, lips for restruction of nose, ears, lips etc were given by an ayurvedic physician called Sushruta, who is now considered the father of rhinoplasty.
The works of Ayurveda were later become known to Chinese and Arabs through trade and pilgrim from these regions. Further, Arabs subsequently transmitted the ayurvedic knowledge to Europe. The knowledge of Ayurveda might be known by some another name outside India but we can imagine how it has shaped the understanding and use of alternative medicines across the world.
